PARENT DUTIES

Representative parent duties are mandatory for all athletes competing at a representative carnival. Parents must give a commitment of help for each and every representative carnival at which they have a child competing. Where the duty roster fills up prior to a parent selecting a duty they will be required to do an additional duty at the following representative carnival or on a normal competition day in the case where there are no athletes from the family competing at the next representative carnival.
Please note, any families who had an athlete competing at State Relays and did not complete a parent duty will be required to fulfil two parent duties at the Zone Championships.

A link to the parent duty roster will be sent out once the selections/nominations are finalised – get in quick to give yourself the best chance of securing your preferred duty at a time convenient to you.  If there are issues preventing you from fulfilling this requirement, please advise both the Manager for Championships (championships@mwlac.org.au) and the Manager for Volunteers (volunteers@mwlac.org.au) so that a resolution can be found prior to the event. The earlier you make contact, the easier the issue might be to resolve, giving your athlete(s) the best opportunity of being able to compete.

On the day, all parent helpers must report to the Manly Warringah Team Manager at least 15 minutes prior to attending your rostered duty. It is important that your name is marked off by one of the team managers or assistants.

If you have signed up as a reserve, you must also sign in with the Manly Warringah Team Manager at least 15 minutes prior to the commencement of your duty. If we have not been able to fill a duty or if a duty becomes available that falls within the period you have signed up, you will be moved to that duty. Where there is advance warning, we will communicate any updates via email or alternatively we will advise you when you check in. If there are no unfulfilled duties, we will ask you to leave your mobile number and we will call you if required.

All parent helpers must be wearing closed in shoes – not thongs or sandals.

ATHLETE CHECK-IN

On arrival ALL athletes must register their attendance with the MWLAC Team Manager located in the MWLAC tent.  If it is their first day of competition they will pick up their cloth number and Coles patch.  This must be done at least one hour before the event time as listed in the final program.

ZONE EVENT MARSHALLING

Click here for a map of the track.

The Zone program shows “not before” start times – meaning an event will not start ahead of this time.

FIELD MARSHALLING

For first field events each day athletes will proceed directly to their event for marshalling at the competition area. For all other field event marshalling competitors must make their way to the designated field marshalling area located behind the 100m starting point on the front track.

TRACK MARSHALLING

All track events marshalling will occur on the northern side of the track near the 1500m starting point.

EVENTS CALLS

Each event will receive two marshalling calls. The first call will be made 20 – 25 minutes before the event start time followed by a second and final call 7 minutes later. In the case of track events, marshalling where possible will close 3 minutes later, with no athlete entries (with the exception of field event clashes) permitted after that cut off point.

CLASH OF EVENTS

There will be a Clash Manager (and assistants) responsible for collecting athletes from field events and taking them to track events when there is a clash.

Athletes U7-U11 will have their events written on their hand each day at the sign-in desk, along with the ‘not before’ time, so that the Event Chief and Clash Manager can more easily assist in identifying any event clashes during the day.  We will using wrist bands to highlight track athletes that have come from a clashing field event. These will be applied to affected athletes by the Clash Management team  Event Chiefs will be instructed only to release children to designated Clash Manager/Assistants (identified by a lanyard).

PARENTS MUST NOT remove children from an event themselves. If they do, the child risks disqualification.

COMPETITOR FOOTWEAR

Shoes are compulsory for all competitors in all events.

  • U7, U8, U9, U10: Spikes may not be worn in any event.
  • U11, U12: Spikes may be worn in all track events run entirely in lanes, all jumps events and javelin.
  • U13, U15, U15, U17: Spikes may be worn in all track events (except Walks), all jumps events, and javelin.

All competitors: Spikes with the spikes removed or blanks inserted may not be worn in any events.

Should you turn up without the correct spikes Jim from Kings Track & Field will have stock available over the weekend to purchase.

SPIKED SHOES MUST BE REMOVED BEFORE LEAVING THE COMPETITION AREA, AND MUST NOT BE WORN TO WALK AROUND THE VENUE UNLESS SUITABLY COVERED.

WARMING UP ON TRACK

Please advise all athletes, parents and coaches that with the exception noted below there is to be NO warming up inside the perimeter fence of the track after 8:00am on both days of the carnival without the prior approval of the Zone Co-Ordinator.

Exception – This year at certain stages during each day we are trialling back track availability for warming up for events such as the hurdles. Entry via track marshalling will be subject to vetting by the track marshall, the times for which will be announced in collaboration with the carnival manager.

COACHES AREA

Senior Athletes ONLY (U12-U17)

Where possible an area designated for Coaches to speak with athletes will be clearly marked with witches’ hats on the perimeter fence for all field events EXCEPT at Triple Jump pits 1 and 2 (due to the possibility for interference across the track).

SNAKES

It is not unusual to sight snakes and other potentially harmful wildlife at the venue. Please be alert and aware at all times when walking around the venue, particularly the upper throws areas and long jumps 1and 2 on the far side of the track away from the grandstand. For this reason too the bush area behind the grandstand is out of bounds.

WEATHER

The Zone Championships will go ahead regardless of the weather so athletes and parents should come prepared with hats and sunscreen as well as umbrellas and raincoats! In the event of extreme conditions, such as excessive heat, storms or flooding, the Championships may be delayed or temporarily suspended. Any decision to delay or postpone the Championships will be made by the Zone Committee and advised to Centre Team Managers as soon as possible.

PORTALOOS

The portaloos are for the benefit of only the athletes, officials and parent helpers that are currently rostered on. All others must use the main toilet areas.

CHAMPIONSHIP EVENTS

Athletes who opt in and offer themselves for selection or self-nominate for the Zone Championships must be available for the Regional (U8 and above) & State Championships (U9 and above). If you are unlikely to be available because of clashes with other sports or activities, such as Nippers Carnivals or Touch Football Gala Days, then the athlete should not be opting in for the Zone Championships

The dates of the Championship events are as follows:

Championship Date Venue
Zone Championships 24th – 26th November 2023 Sydney Academy of Sport Narrabeen
Region Championships 10th – 11th February 2024 Sydney Academy of Sport Narrabeen

WITHDRAWING FROM A CHAMPIONSHIP

If an athlete withdraws from an event, their position cannot be given to the next best athlete. This applies to:

  • Athletes who qualify from a heat to a final at any of the championships
  • Athletes who qualify to compete at either the Region or State championship and does not notify the MWLAC Team Manager PRIOR to the conclusion of the carnival

We ask that you consider this when selecting your events, keep in mind the load on the athlete as well as the extreme temperatures we often experience at this time of the year. If an athlete withdraws from an event prior to the championship or during the championship without reasonable cause, the athlete will be ineligible to be part of the end of season awards and in the case where they are successful at making it to the Region or State Championships in another event, they will be ineligible for the Representative gift.
